W.E.S.T. 2016 Report

The most extreme BBQ-Event has taken place from 15th to 17th of January 2016: W.E.S.T. – Winter Extreme South Tyrol. The weather-conditions was really extreme. Windy and cold. Cold. Dark. Extreme. There was 30 teams competing and Southern Dutch BBQ from the Netherlands is Grand Champions of W.E.S.T. It was a awesome Event for the approx. 2000 visitors.

Great conclusion of W.E.S.T. with the possibility to give a check of 2.000 Euro to Debra, the worldwide network of national groups working on behalf of those affected by the genetic skin blistering condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB).  Many Thanks to all the teams, the fire fighters of Rein, the Tourism Office and all the visitors.

Let’s begin a little bit earlier. We started 208 days at IBC in Perugia, where at 2:08pm we open the registration for W.E.S.T. 2016.

First registered team was Lyndz and Scott from Miss Piggy’s.

Last year we lost 5 tents, therefore we rent Wood-sheds for every Team. Rapid SRL, a Company from Trento, invented a folding system for the cabins.

First we started with 24 spots. They was full in a couple of months. We open another 6 spots in October. For 30 teams you need 30 Judges and 5 Table Captains. For the Judges – as for the teams – every contest means costs. We decided to organize a KCBS Judging Class, to have Judges in South Tyrol too. Finally we had 51 participants in the class, coming from 5 nations! At the Grill Academy at Goasroscht we had a beautyful place, but may a little bit to small for 50 people. Many thanks to Tomaso Castiglioni and Samuele Turri cooking the class.

The first teams set up their spot on Friday morning. We provide big sledges to bring the hole stuff to the spots. The teams had fun with that. Saturday the rest of the teams arrived and at 5pm we could start the Cooks Meeting.

At the Cooks Meeting we revealed the contest of the Mystery Box – the ancillary category at W.E.S.T. 24 Teams decided to cook it. It is hard cooking something that you don’t know and you can’t prepare anything. That was our intention: Creativity and knowledge! We put a piece of beef shoulder and 2 beetroots in. The winner of this category get a Wild Card for “Brixia 4 Star Championship” at Brescia in September. Congrats to “Salzburger Barbecue Bulls” winning the category!

The MiGhty four reps from KCBS (Maria and Wayne Lohman, Debby and Bill Gage) explained the details of the contest and give also some very important informations. They spend a lot of time with new teams helping them throught the first contest. At the end of the meeting the reps had a surprise for one Team: Miss Piggy’s get the award as “KSBS Team of the Year 2015”. We give them also a little present for their 50th contest: A traditional blue apron with their names on it.

At the very end of the cooks meeting it is a tradition to take a shot. We interupted again, because we had a surprise for KCBS. KCBS celebrate the 30th anniversary and we printed a banner, which  every team and judge can sign.

The overnight was chilly. Michele and Haymo sleeped at Rein in Taufers and checked the contest area the hole night. The American Rock Party was ongoing. Detail: This year we give the teams a quiet time: from 5 to 7am! 🙂

Sunday at 10am all the Judges was at the Judge Meeting. The Kids Program started, the exhibitors was at their stands and the first visitors joined the contest. The Cooks for the audience – Jeroen, Hans, Marco and Andrea – did an awesome work cooking Ribs and Pulled Pork in Italians biggest smoker.

First turn-in was at 11.30am – Mystery Box. 12am Chicken, 12.30 Ribs, 1pm Pork, 1.30 Brisket. The wind was calm during that period, but it started again at the Awards. Therefore we moved into the judge house. It was to small for everybody – sorry for that inconvenience.
